FOR IMMEDIATE Release
Indigenous Languages Action Forum (ILAF) welcomes the appointment of Justice Mandisa Maya, as South Africa’s first woman Chief Justice. As the ILAF community, we are elated to exist in an era where our Chief Justice has openly promoted and used the indigenous languages in the legal system. Justice Maya’s calls for indigenous languages to be developed for use in courtrooms is refreshing and inspiring. Her support and encouragement of colleagues in the judiciary to use their official languages while writing judgments, illustrates her commitment to the equal promotion, use and development of indigenous languages. Justice Maya’s bilingual isiXhosa- English judgment in the case of Afriforum v Unisa was groundbreaking illustrating that indigenous languages can be used in the legal system. We have no doubt that Justice Maya’s appointment will chart a new chapter in our quest for linguistic transformation of South Africa’s legal system and profession. As the ILAF community we extend our heartiest congratulations to Justice Maya. Halala!
