The African Language Association of Southern Africa (ALASA) was established in 1979 as a non-discriminatory, non-profit-making association at a conference hosted by the Department of African Languages of the University of South Africa (UNISA).
ALASA has two main aims:
1. to promote interaction between researchers, students and teachers of African languages and literature, and
2. to assist in the promotion of research, language development and effective verbal and written communication in a multilingual society, for example, in matters relating to language planning and policy, education policy and liaison with other organisations with similar interests.
